Coming from where I’m from

How I live in this world is because of where I’m from. I come from two nations. Dine and Nimiipuu. I am proud of my heritage and the teachings from both my families. They have made me who I am and show me how to be a woman in this world.

Coming from where I’m from,

There are tumble weeds in the dessert.

Coming from where I’m from,

There is one free flowing river that has not been dammed, the Salmon River.

Coming from where I’m from,

the rocks jut out of the earth like skyscrapers on the Rez.

Coming from where I’m from,

We eat achii and tortillas and bone marrow soup.

Coming from where I’m from,

We eat huckleberries and bitteroot.

Coming from where I’m from,

the mountain peaks shine in all their glory.

Coming from where I’m from,

the spirit of my grandmother and her grandmothers’ watch over us.

Coming from where I’m from,

We can see the Northern lights in all their glory.

Coming from where I’m from…

I am a daughter of the earth.
